4 Who would be the audience for your media product?

For my target audience, it could be seen as rather 'broad' because I have not focused on one gender. The stereotypical indie scenester/scene kid can be male or female and their music interests often reflect this. Also, I have not concentrated on any particular race or religion. On the other hand, it is aimed at mainly teenagers, aged around 15 to 19 because I feel the content included would be more interesting for this age group. Many of my target audience want to stand out and are classed as individualists. This is reflected by their outrageous choice of clothing and hair styles. This is a great advertising opportunity, because they normally have such great interest in fashion. After some more audience research, I found out that many teens from these stereotypes prefer horror, comedy or a mixture of both when choosing films. A lot of the music mentioned as their favourites included bands that are known less than the mainstream alternative bands.

When it comes to advertising, there is a lot of potential based on the fact that my target audience are individualist and like to stand out. Therefore, nothing is out of their way and everything can be incorporated into their style. Clothing, beauty products (such as make-up), shoes, music albums and gigs are all possibilities because they will appeal to both genders and the whole of my target audience. From looking at UK Tribes, at the indie scenester and scene kids sections, I am able to see they both have quite heavy media consumption for magazines and Internet. This means they are more likely to be interested in the synergy of an online version, as well as a hard print.

Due to initial research, it is easy to see that a majority of people have £20 or more to spend during an average week. Out of this £20, most people would be willing to spend up to £3 on a magazine. Further research revealed some of the brands and items the target audience would be interested in. Most people came up with the same results including: deadgood store, drop dead clothing, Glamour Kills clothing and Rockett clothing. It was also noticed that most people would be more inclined to buy or wear clothes that have been worn or modeled for by a famous badn or singer. This increases advertising potential because it opens places for them to advertise. For example, drop dead would be interested in advertising next to an article on 'Oli Sykes' from bring me the horizon because he is an avid fan of the brand.

  1. Did your target audience research suggest that this audience was viable? How much disposable income that they have? Do they cover a wide range of social classes from A to C1/C2? If you take a look at the media kit of a real magazine such as NME you will see that the publishers understand their audience right down to the individual brands that they prefer. What products and brands would your audience be into? These would be the companies that you would try to establish an advertising relationship with.
